Well, this is just a small item: Spencer Tracy and director Stanley Kramer had had a fragile professional relationship, and at a press conference in Paris Kramer once stated that Oskar Werner was "as good an actor as one would want to work with." Tracy, after reading this in a NYC newspaper, cut out the quote and mailed it to Kramer with a note (written in red pen) that said, "What the hell is this?" To soothe Tracy's ego, Kramer sent back a note that said, "What you don't understand about that quote is that I was speaking only of mortal actors!." Of course, we fans of the immortal Oskar know that Kramer was wrong on that one!  |
