Early 80's? Well, it must be in the Café Eiles.. near the place he lived in Vienna.. I was there several times, too... sadly, the people who work there, are not that nice.. but ok..

Good evening Nici and many thanks, :)
Have you a picture of that street or of that place Café Eiles. And have you a picture of the place where Oskar lived ?
It would be nice.
People who work there are not the same ? I think no... very long time ago.

Marie-Jeanne

I believe that, in Oskar's younger days, the Cafe Eiles was owned and run by a couple who had owned it for some time. It was famous for attracting many people from the "arts" (music, theater etc) for a long time.
At some point the husband died but his wife kept it open and was, possibly, the owner at the time of the interview. If I remember correctly (Nici please let me know if I am wrong) the wife, by this time in her 90's, died relatively recently. I would imagine that the cafe has become so famous that it has been kept running, perhaps by someone who inherited it from its founders.
Coffee houses and cafes like this were very popular in Vienna for a very long time, enough so that I believe most are still operating. This particular one was, apparently, Oskar's favorite. There are other photos existing of this interview in this cafe and they appear in other books about Oskar. These show Oskar from a different angle and the typical wall decor of the cafe shows more than in this photo.

Good day my friends ! :)
Many thanks Pamela, :)
It's a pity that we have not other pictures of the Cafe Eiles.
Now, I should like to know the date of this picture made.

Oskar had a house in Triesen, where it was in Triesen ? He had again in the end ?
Can you say me ?

I looked at the Internet: "Café Eiles". One can find several websites about this café. with pictures from inside and outside. Some websites can be read in French too! Also a bit of the history of this old Vienna café with newspapers. magazins etc. It's situated in Josefstädter Strasse 2, close to the Ringstrasse and near Trautsongasse where OW's Vienna appartment was.
The house in Triesen was his property since he earned money by making Decision before Dawn. In the beginning it was a very small house, later on he made it bigger. In the documentation "Ich bin empfindsamer als andere - Oskar Werner in Liechtenstein" we can see pictures of the house, from outside and also from inside. The docu was made after OW's death. The house is situated on a "hillside" with a breathtaking view to the Rhine Valley. He put much energy in that house, inspired by the Renaissance period. There he learned the Hamlet by heart.
I hope this answer can help you, Marie-Jeanne!
Greetings from Susanne

Many thanks, Susanne :)
Your answer teaches me something. But I don't know how to find this document on his Triesen house. Can you tell me how I can obtain the documents ?
I searched on Google Austria "Café Eiles" and I found no picture, not a lot of information. I have probably searched without to find. If you have any links, do you communicate me ?

@ Pamela, I think you talked about the Café Hawelka, which was and still is in the 1st distrinct of Vienna.
The Café Eiles is in the 8th disctrinct. I don't know if and how often he visited it while he played Hamlet in "Theater in der Josefstadt", but in his last years, while staying in Vienna, he must have been there often.
"Coffee houses" are still popular in Vienna, since they are a part of it and our culture.
@ Marie-Jeanne: This picture is from 1982, I think. Oskar visited the house were he spent most of his childhood: Marchettigasse 1A, in the 6th distrinct of Vienna. You can see him here, outside of the apartment at the corridor, right next to a "bassena", a communal water tap, where people used to get their water back then.

Hello, Nici - yes, you are right. I recognize the name of the Cafe Hawelka. There was something about the widow who was still running it and was well into her nineties. I believe it was on the occasion of her death but I am not sure. That cafe' was very identifiable because of the wood work along the walls and the wall paper. Also, in the same article I saw on line, it was shown that many, many members of the artistic part of Viennese life made it a popular spot. It showed the familiar photo of a very young Oskar with three or so friends.
Do you think Oskar still looked that heathy in '82? I have always felt his worst years were '82 and '83. When was the photo taken in the "Burg" where he is in obvious sorrow, feeling (his) "theater (was) dead." Perhaps that one was taken in '82? I rather thought the photo in question might have been in '80 when the photo of him on the balcony of his Vienna apartment was taken. Felix had been with him up until then for a few years. I think his sadness and depression took over shortly after that. There's also the photo of him with Schani that was taken in the Wauchau in '80. He looks sombre and his eyes, in that photo and the one on the balcony seem to have an almost desolate expresion. That has always haunted me. He was depressed but not as depressed as he was in the years following. It didn't seem to make a difference with his letter writing to me..... one, which had gone to Triesen and been forwarded to Vienna, or brought there, was only different in the time it took him to respond. But, because I had only the Triesen address I felt that was delayed because he was living in Vienna, his reply came from there.
But, you have better knowledge of those times than I. It is amazing that I never sensed anything like the depth of his depression when writing - but then, that was private to him and not shared with most of the outside world. It makes me so angry that the "outside world" felt no guilt or compassion about tearing him and his work apart in so many public forums. That some of this was based entirely on rumors really angers me! The worst offender in this latter group lived in the US and still does as far as I know. This person had better not cross my path is all I can say!

Many thanks Nici, :)
Dear Pamela, :)
I really feel your anger for a long time about this depression, and for this reason. You always clear, it is something that haunts you and it's a pain that I feel in your heart every time, because you did not know what he really suffered when you wrote him and when he wrte you. He didn't showed his suffering and his depression because he was happy to write you. It was for him a moment of happiness. You were doing him forget his pain, his suffering and disappointments. You were a small planet for him, a wonderful garden he would visit. And when you wrote him or when he wrote you, he was in this beautiful garden. To breathe fresh air : you were the oxygen for him. You brought your heat it to you, the sunshine came to him through the window.
Pamela would cure this anger, it's not good to live it every day. I agree with you: "This person had better not cross my path is all I can say!", but it's also up to you that you are doing evil and with great sorrow.
I could tell you much more about what I think, but I don't want to invade the forum.
Oskar is like that person I have known. Imagine there is a great staircase: while everything could go far and could go to be well, our friend fell from the top of the stairs and smashed down, morale broke . Some people have broken hiss joy to live, but no one has broken his beautiful soul. This was the same thing for that person I spoke to you about. I felt the same thing as you.
He descended the stairs slowly, and each step he hurts because he has been hurt and cashed after all sudden, he collapsed without saying anything. He was stoic after all he had been through, the war until all its disappointments. He was a true man.

Marie-Jeanne

Marie-Jeanne, you are a treasure!
Thank you.
We will "talk" again on email.
One thing Oskar has given me through this Forum is contact with people like you who are the true blessings this world needs more of! I have made some friends that I believe I will always have and who are wonderful, giving souls. Oskar was one also, in his way.
Fondly,
Pam

Pamela, :)
You find I may be a treasure because I always speak with my heart and in my heart I always put all my soul. I do'nt know if I'm a treasure, but I know that every day I go on the way for peace among men, me also in my way. And I understand what Oskar made for men in this world. You understand you also.
Oskar was a man of peace, and with love. To be a man with love is difficult in that world. Men of peace : we have seen in the history of humanity, is receiving blows by others. These people, the more they fight for love and peace, through art or through their profession, require a wonderful garden to take forces and continue to stand up. Sometimes they meet the wonderful garden too late in their lives. But we have still managed to find the garden in the wonderful world of desert.
Anger kills the body, kills the spirit, kills the soul. To hear peace and love for humanity, those who make that "war of love" against the real wars, know that they will kill. They need a beautiful garden, which is never with anger but always with peace in all the flowers that grow here.
While I wrote this message, the book "Margaretha Mazura, Oskar's biography", arrived. I just open, it'ss my first book in German and German words : the first contact with this biography is good.I'm sure that I will come to translate it.
Pamela : love is a war against human stupidity, but we can not be someone else.
To you with all my heart. :)

Marie-Jeanne
